Dehradun : Villagers virtually held a forest team captive for a few hours in Almora’s Marchula village on Friday seeking to reinstate ment of a forest guard and withdrawal a case lodged against him for allegedly firing at a tigress during a botched operation to rescue the big cat that had strayed into Almora on Monday night. The forest team was allowed to leave after nearly four hour – long heated arguments with the villagers.

One of the protesting villagers, Ajay Rawat, demanded that the case against the guard – Dheeraj Singh Rawat should be withdrawn since he had ” helped villagers as an elderly woman had been killed in a leopard attack and another injured a few days back “. The forest guard has been attached to another forest range of Corbett after the incident.

Reacting to the villagers ‘ demand, chief wildlife warden Sa mir Sinha said. ” We respect the sentiments of villagers. However, every action in a tiger killing will be taken as per the law. Currently, a magisterial probe and an enqui ry by the forest department are going on in this matter. ” Meanwhile , wildlife lovers have demanded a fair probe in the matter.
