“My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them,” Sonali said in a statement.

The actor, the latest Bollywood celebrity to be diagnosed with cancer after Irrfan Khan, said she is taking the battle head on.

“There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way… I’m taking this battle head on, knowing I have the strength of my family and friends behind me,” she added.

Important details about metastatic cancer have been given below:

When cancer cells break away from the primary spot where they were formed and spread to other parts through lymph system or blood, it is called metastatic cancer. The cancer cells develop tumours in other parts of the human body, also known as metastatic tumours. However, both the primary and metastatic cancer are same in nature.

Metastasis is the process by which a tumor cell leaves the primary tumor, travels to a distant site via the circulatory system, and establishes a secondary tumor Metastatic tumors

According to cancer.gov, a metastasis occurs in the stage IV (four) of many forms of cancer. Metastasis is a serious stage as it means that the cancer was strong enough to spread to other parts of the body.

As metastatic cancer is similar to the primary form of cancer, so, for example, if breast cancer spreads to lungs, it will be called metastatic breast cancer, not lung cancer. The treatment for the metastatic cancer would be like that of stage IV breast cancer.

As the cancers may be similar in nature, the medical professional may fail to locate the primary spot of cancer. Such a diagnosis is known as cancer of unknown primary origin, or CUP.
