New Delhi: ITT Guwahati direct for professor TG Sitharam has been appointed new chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education ( AICTE ), by the ministry of education on Tuesday. He will: nical serve as the head of the tech education regulator for three years or before he turns 65 years old, whichever is earlier.
Sitharam will take charge from the University Grants Commission chairman. Jagadesh Kumar, who was holding interim charge of the top post for the technical education regulator after Anil Sahas rabuddhe superannuated on Sep tember 1, 2021 upon turning 65.
Sitharam took over as the director of IIT – Guwahati in July 2019. Prior to that, he was a professor at the department of civil engineering. Indian Institute of Science ( IISc ), Bangalore, after a stint as the chair professor in the ener institute.
He served at the IISc for around 27 years. His appointment comes at a time when the MoE is putting the final touches to the bill that intends to merge the AICTE and the UGC into a super regulator – the Higher Education Commission of India ( HECI ).
Sitharam was earlier the founder and chairperson of the Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transport and Urban Planning ( CiS TUP ) at IISc, Bengaluru.
Presently, he is the honorary professorial fellow at the University of Wollongong, Wollongong, Australia from 2019 to 2022 and a distinguished professor at Hankou University International Innovation Centre, China. Sitharam obtained Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada ( 1991 ).
