Dehradun : The Dehradun Municipal Corporation ( DMC ) will start penalising pet owners from May 1 for failing to register their pets with the civic agency .
Licensing and registration of pet animals are mandatory , though the process is not common among owners in Dehradun . In the last financial year , there were 3,500 registrations with the corporation , in clouding renewals which happen annually .
The registrations are closely related to the anti – rabies vaccination , the certify cate of which has to be attached during the licensing process . It can be done directly on the corporation’s website under the ‘ dog licence ‘ header with a nominal fee .

In a notice to all residents ‘ welfare associations and high-rises in the city , the chief veterinary officer has directed all pet owners to get their animals registered as soon as possible . ” From May 1 , if any pet is found unregistered , the owner is liable to be penalised under provisions of the pet licence by – laws , 2017 and Municipal Corporation Act , 1959 , ” said the order .
Senior veterinary officer , Dr DC Tiwari , that the penalty against the owners starts from R 500 and can go up depending on the kind of nuisance issue being created by the animal in question .
Officials in Dehradun have never been able to estimate the pet population as the registrations are very less compared to the actual figures . DMC has been pushing for animal registration , but the numbers have been consistently low .
