Surat : Junior home minister of Gujarat Harsh Sanghavi on Friday announced that police across the state will not collect fines from commuters for traffic violations starting midnight of October 21 to October 27 during Di wali festivities.

Speaking at a function in the Diamond City, Sanghavi said instead of fining them, traffic cops will greet the violators with flowers. ” An important decision has been taken under the guidance of chief minister Bhupendra Patel.

Starting October 21 till midnight Oc tober 27, Gujarat Police will not penalize anyone for a traffic violation in the state. If traffic cops catch anyone without a helmet, or license or for any other traffic violation, s / he will be greeted with a flower, ” Sanghavi said during the ‘ Safe Diwali, Safe Surat ‘ function of the city police.

Meanwhile, Surat is engrossed in Diwali shopping and celebration and will have to plan in advance if they want to venture out on a vehicle due to heavy traffic snarls.

They have to brace for traffic jams at every junction in the city.

Top traffic and civic officials in Surat said that people are coming out in large numbers for shopping and other work, leading to frequent traffic jams. Surat traffic police have made specific arrangements to manage traffic while Surat Municipal Corporation ( SMC ) has reduced the number of city and BRTS buses by 30 %.
