Hassan : Nine members of an extended family, including four children, died and three suffered injuries when their tourist vehicle was caught in a three-vehicle pile-up in Has san district of Karnataka late Saturday night.

Police said the victims were returning from a day-long pilgrimage to Dharmas Thala and Subrahmanya in neighboring Dakshina Kan nada district when the accident occurred at a village 3km from their hometowns.

The deceased are from Hal likes and Doddenahalli villages in Arsikere taluk of Hassan district. CM Basavaraj Bommai announced Rs 2 lakh compensation each to the kin of the dead and proper medical care for the injured.

The deceased have been identified as Chaitra S ( 33 ), Srushti ( 12 ), Samarth ( 10 ), Vandana G ( 20 ), Leelavati R ( 55 ), Doddaiah P ( 60 ), Bharati ( 50 ), Tanmay Santosh ( 12 ) and Dhruva Santosh ( 2 ).

On Saturday morning, 14 people left for Dharmasthala and Subramanya in a vehicle owned by the family. After visiting the temples, they were returning home when their vehicle collided with a milk tanker coming from the opposite direction.
