NIA searches for suspects involved in drugs , arms racket aimed at LTTE revival

New Delhi : The National Investigate tin Agency on Thursday carried out searches at Chennai – based premises of eight suspects involved in the Indo – Sri Lankan illegal drugs and arms trade racket aimed at revival of the terrorist outfit LTTE . The case was taken up for probe by the NIA in July 2022 .

The recoveries include a huge cache of cash , gold bars , digital devices including mobile phones and memory cards , drugs and documents , along with other incriminating material . NIA on Friday said Ayyappan was found to be managing the drug trade on behalf of Mu hammed Amin , a Sri Lankan refugee and a drug trafficker who had conspired with other accused to revive LTTE through drugs and arms trade .

With Ayyappan in the net , the total arrests in the case so far total 14. Third teen accused were arrested earlier in December 2022 , as part of raids con ducted across 21 locations in Tamil Na du . The locations raided in the first in stance had included the accommodated tin allotted to nine accused in the special detention camp at Trichy .

Investigations have shown that the proceeds of drugs and arms trade in Sri Lanka were received in India through hawala agents , including one Shahidi Ali of Chennai .

It was further found that the hawala transactions to obtain the process of drugs and arms trade were done through hotels and businesses based in Manmade , Chennai . Thursday’s seizure included R 68 lakhs in Indian currency and 1,000 Singapore dollars , nine gold biscuits with a total weight of 300 gm , from the shop of Shahidi Ali . The NIA has also recovered R 12 lakh in Indian currency from Orange Palace hotel at Chennai .
