Mechanisation of waste mgmt to go up

Dehradun: Follow-up inspections of Swachh Survekshan 2023 were conducted in the state, earlier this month, in which suggestions have been given to Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) to increase mechanisation in the waste management process.

Dehradun had ranked 69th in SS’ 22 and even though officials claim that waste management in the city is improving, in the inspections for SS’23 the civic body has been pulled up multiple times for not putting in more effort. Based on these inputs, the DMC will now implement more changes.

“It has been suggested that we need to further in- crease the number of garbage collection vehicles. We have now put in the request for 50 more vehicles with the state government. Similarly, focus on mechanisation of the process will also be done. For the transfer station at Kari, 15 days have been given for a DPR to mechanise the whole process and minimise manual intervention,” said municipal commissioner, Manju Goyal.

This is aimed at improving the civic situation in the area which according to locals is in a deplorable state. Waste management in the city is still not up to par with the requisite standards and operations at Sheeshambara trenching ground, especially, continue to be an area of concern for the locals as well as the government inspectors. “DMC claims that the situation is improving but it is not. Waste continues to ac- cumulate there without being processed,” said Raj Gang sari, a local resident. The next hearing has been scheduled for August 18.

The civic body however, maintains that ever since the new company has taken over, operations have improved.

“RDF is being sent outside the state, the waste is being processed,” said chief health officer, Dr Avinashi Khanna. Officials said there is about 3 lakh tonne waste at the plant which locals allege is “wrong and the actual quantity is up- wards of 5 lakh tonne”. Dehradun currently produces 350-400 metric tonnes of garbage every day.
