New Delhi: Describing the deaths of Indian prisoners in Pakistan as alarming, the government on Friday said it had taken up the issue with Islamabad.
The ministry of external affairs confirmed that six Indian prisoners had died in Pakistan in the past nine months. All of them had completed their sentences MEA spokesperson Arin dam Bagchi said among the dead were five fishermen.
” The situation is alarming. All the dead had completed their sentences. It’s the responsibility of Pakis tan to ensure the safety of Indian prisoners in that country, ” he said.
India had earlier asked Pakistan to expedite the release and repatriation of 536 Indian fishermen and three Indian civilian prisoners who have completed their sentence and whose nationality has been confirmed and conveyed to Pakistan. In addition, Pakistan was asked to provide immediate consular access to the remaining 105 fishermen and 20 civilian prisoners who are in Pakis tan’s custody and are believed to be Indians.
