Inadequacies found with OBC survey, commission takes action

Dehradun: The ongoing OBC (Other Back- ward Classes) survey in Uttarakhand has been facing delays and inaccuracies, prompting the single member dedicated commission to take action. Officials have reported that the survey was not being con- ducted according to specified guidelines and that complaints had been received in this regard.

The survey was intended to identify the exact numbers and data of the OBC community in the state, which is essential for the implementation of various state government schemes and policies. Accurate data is also important for all sorts of administrative reasons and for the public as well.

“In Khatami, for instance, instead of conducting the survey door-to-door, it was being done based on previous reports and data. The local councilors said that the sur- vey has not been carried out thoroughly. We cancelled it and have given 15 days for it to be redone according to procedure and the officer concerned has been transferred,” said Omkar Singh, member secretary, single member dedicated commission.

Similarly, in Champawat and Dhar Chula, fresh instructions had to be issued tone- sure that the survey was conducted with due process, and reports were asked to re- move any earlier shortcomings. “However, we are yet to receive any data, not even from Dehradun. We have instructed for the sur- vey to be concluded by June after which we will also need some time to finish the process,” said Singh. Accordingly, the commission has instructed that the survey be concluded by June, Singh said. Inaccuracies in the survey may severely impact the upcoming elections of local bodies in the state. To address the delays and inaccuracies, a letter has been sent to the additional chief secretary highlighting the commission’s concerns. The commission has also stated that public feedback and objections arising from the survey will be dealt with on a case-by- case basis.
