Guwahati: A 20 – year – an old former student of IIT Guwahati was found dead inside a hostel room at the institute on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Gudla Mahesh Sai Raj from Andhra Pradesh. He was a fifth-semester student of BTech in computer science and engineering. According to sources from IIT – Guwahati, the student was allegedly terminated by the institute in July for his ” poor academic performance”.

Police suspect the student died by suicide which was brought about by mental pressure. ” However, an investigation will reveal the exact cause of death, ” Tanmoy Nath, in – charge of the Amingaon police outpost, said.

” On being informed by students of the Lohit hostel, a police team rushed there and found the body hanging from a ceiling fan inside an empty room. The body was later brought down following procedures and sent for post – mortem examination, ” Nath said. Cops had to break open the door of the room to gain access. No suicide note was recovered. Nath said the family members, who were immediately informed after the body was identified, reached the campus on Sunday afternoon. ” After the due procedure, the body of the deceased will be handed over to them, ” he said.

The institute, in a press statement, said: ” The body of a young man was found in one of the hostel buildings at IIT Guwahati early this morning. He has been identified as a former student of the institute. IIT, Guwahati expresses its deepest condolences to the family at this time of profound grief. We will cooperate with the police investigation and will also commission an internal investigation on this matter. ” On September 17, a 21 – year – old student from Thiruvananthapuram was found dead inside a hostel room at IIT – Guwahati. The deceased was identified as Surya Narayanan, a fourth-year student of design engineering.
