Dehradun : Draupadi ka Danda , site of the avalanche tragedy in Uttarkashi , was regarded by instructors at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering ( NIM ) as the ‘ safest training peak ‘ since there were no instances of avalanches on the peak and it was regarded as an optimal site for mountaineering training since the past few decades .

Former NIM principal , Colonel Ajay Kothiyal ( retd ) , who has led several expeditions to the mountain , said that the peak had ” a 100 % success record ” before the October 4 deadly avalanche , which left four killed and 27 still missing .

” Draupadi ka Danda was our training ground to teach mountaineers how to successfully plan and execute a high – altitude expedition . We never experienced or expected such an avalanche there , ” said Kothiyal .

In the last leg of its 28 – day long Mountaineering Advanced Course ( AMC ) , NIM takes the participants to the peak , situated along the Dokrani Bamak glacier , as part of its ‘ height gain ‘ exercise .

Talking about the mountain , Sunil Rawat , former student of NIM , ” Draupadi ka Dan da has always been considered very safe , which is why NIM chose it as its training peak . Being a pro fessional mountaineering institute , safety of trainees has always been paramount for NIM . “

Former instructor at NIM , Love Raj Dharmshaktu , who has scaled Mount Everest a record seven times , added that ” it is very unortunate that such an incident occurred in Draupadi ka Danda . ” ” It is a fairly simple and non – technical peak . It is quite saddening that this tragedy happened there . “
