Declared dead , ‘ breathing ‘ newborn re – hospitalised ; dies

Midnapore : The West Ben gal health department on Sunday initiated a probe after a newborn , premature and underweight , was declared dead at Ghatam Super Speciality Hospital , only to be readmitted hours later after the child’s parents no noticed him breathing before his burial . The baby did not survive .

Two doctors who had is sued the death certificate have been issued show cause notices . Two invest gabion teams have been formed , including one headed by Midnapore Medical College & Hospital principal Mausam Nandi , also a paediatrician . The teams have been asked to probe whether this was a case of ” suspended animation ” when all vital body functions in newborns stop temporarily .

According to the family , the homemaker from Ras kundru gave birth around 2pm on Saturday . The baby was born after 22 weeks and weighed 440g . Around 5pm , the family was told that the boy had not survived . A death certificate was issued around 9pm and the ‘ body ‘ was handed over .

Later , before the burial , the baby’s parents noticed that he was breathing and rushed back to the hospital around midnight . The child , however , did not survive . The angry family accused doctors of negligence .
