Kolkata : ATK Mohun Bagan suffered a rude jolt in their search for the elusive Indian Super League crown, going down 1-2 to Chennaiyin FC in their campaign – opener at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.
When Manvir Singh put the home team in front, providing a sumptuous finish to an equally eye-catching move in the 26th minute, Juan Fer rando’s side appeared to be set for smooth sailing. But Chennaiyin FC came back after the break with a different plan and their German coach Tomas Brdaric’s decision to introduce Ghanaian striker Kwame Karikari in the 58th minute turned out to be a game-changer.
Karikari earned and converted a penalty to make it 1-1 in the 63rd minute and then provided the assist for Rahim Ali to slam home the winner 20 minutes later as Chennai in FC queered the pitch for ATKMB. This was also the first time that ATKMB suffered a loss in the opening game of an ISL season since they came into being with a new identity two years ago.
