Buzz over Mamata-Natis meet in Kolkata today

Patna/Kolkata: Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to meet her Bihar counterpart, Nitish Kumar on Monday, setting off intense speculation about talks of a united opposition front ahead of the 2024 LS polls, though neither TMC nor JD (U) confirmed anything.

“What is the need for asking about such a meeting at this juncture? When I meet her, I will inform you (reporters),” the Bihar CM said, when asked. Sources, however, said Banerjee and Kumar are supposed to meet at Nab anna, the Bengal secretariat, at 2pm.

Trinomial Congress has not yet commented on the proposed meeting. Party MP Shantanu Sen avoided specifics, saying,.

“CM Mamata Banerjee had always spoken of opposition unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.” During a recent visit to Delhi, Kumar and his deputy, Tejaswini Prasad Yadav, had met AICC president Mallikarjun Charge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as part of their effort to unite opposition parties against BJP ahead of the 2024 polls.

Besides Charge and Gandhi, Kumar also met several other opposition leaders, in- including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. Asked about his efforts to unite opposition leaders, the Bihar CM said he had clarified multiple times that he had no ambition for any post. “We are trying to unite more and more parties in the country,” he said.
