BJP sweeps autonomous Council polls in Mizoram

Aizawl : BJP swept the elections to retain office in the Mara Autonoe moues District Council ( MADC ) of Mizoram by bagging 41 of the 99 village councils Thursday – a victory seen as significant in the Christian majority northeastern state that elects a new assembly later this year .

The MADC is one of the three au tenuous district councils cost tutted under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution . BJP assumed office in the MADC last year , while Mizo National Front ( MNF ) that governs the state runs the Lai Autonomous District Council ( LADC ) . The Chaka ma Autonomous District Council ( CADC ) has been under governor’s rule since last December .

The latest election to the MADC was held Tuesday . Apart from BJP’s landslide win , MNF took 25 village councils , Congress won eight , Zo ram People’s Movement ( ZPM ) got two and an independent candidate won in one . There’s no clearmajori ty in 22 village councils , which elect representatives to the MADC .

The MADC area is made up of 99 village councils and 492 seats , 33 % of which are reserved for women . Bigger villages have seven members ( seats ) , while smaller villages may have five or three members / seats . Village councils are the equivalent of panchayats .

One reason for BJP’s success is the resignation of minister of state K Beachhead on December 13 last year . Beachhead was asked to step down by CM Zoramthanga following the defection of some MNF members of district council considered to be close to the former , which resulted in the toppling of the MNF Congress coalition in the MADC and putting BJP in office .

Political analysts predict BJP , which has only one legislator in Mizoram , could win more seats when elections to the 40 – member state assembly is held this year . Beach is most likely to join BJP and contest from the Siaya assembly lee seat .
