Uttarkashi: Five people were killed and one person was critically injured after a private car they were travelling in fell into an 800m – deep gorge in Brahmkhal region of Uttarkashi district on Saturday afternoon.
The incident is the third major road accident in the Himalayan state in a span of around 45 days and comes close on the heels of another major accident on Friday in which 12 people were killed after a pickup vehicle they were travelling in, skidded off the road and fell into a 700m – deep gorge in Palla Jakhol village of Chamoli district. On October 4, as many as 32 people were killed after a bus carrying a marriage party fell into a gorge in the Dhumakot area of the Pauri Garhwal district.
According to sources, in Saturday’s accident, six local residents were headed towards Barkot from Bhatwa ri in a car when tragedy struck. Soon after the accident, relief personnel reached the spot and started a search and rescue operation. The deceased were identified as Balbir Singh Chauhan ( 67 ), Prem Lal ( 65 ) , Shyamli Devi ( 52 ), Gangi De vi ( 67 ) and Amar Singh ( 72 ). The injured, Ramkali Devi ( 67 ), was rushed to the near est hospital in Chinyalisaur, from where she was later referred to a higher medical centre in Dehradun.
Devendra Patwal, district disaster management officer, said, ” All victims were residents of Uttar Kashi district. The bodies have been sent to the district hospital for postmortem examination.
