Islamabad : Flood – hit Pakistan stares at a second disaster as waterborne diseases triggered by stagnant waters in southern Sindh province alone have killed more than 350 people so far : Officials grappling with the 33 million flood – affected have warned of losing control of such infections in a situation so dire that the WHO described it as ” utterly heartbreaking ” .

With Pakistan’s weak health system and lack of sup port , displaced families have complained of being forced to drink , and cook , with disease ridden water . The National Dis aster Management Authority (NDMA) categorises deaths from diseases as separate from the 1,606 people directly killed by the flash floods since mid – June, among them 600 children .
